Alfred Wainwright's Lakeland Fells

The Walking Englishman's trubute to Alfred Wainwright and his masterpiece work, the seven books which complete 'The Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells'.

I have been walking the mountains of the Lake District since the early 1990's with no real objectives other than to enjoy spectacular walks in the beautiful scenery the Lake District provides. However, one of my Christmas presents in 2007 was the complete set of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. Since then I have been reading his illuminating books and now I have finally decided to follow in the footsteps of him and countless other walkers by completing as many of the most desirable 214 fells described in his seven books as I can. Not all mind you, I have no designs to reach desolate Mungrisdale Common again. And I cannot see me climbing Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell either. Not while more exciting looking mountains loom close by. Anyway, I still intend to do most of them. And perhaps in my dotage I may change my mind and complete them all. If I do, next time I will pick a good weather day for Mungrisdale Common.
