Summary: The Trent and Mersey Canal walk which begins at Runcorn in Cheshire runs in a general south-east direction to Lichfield in the North Midlands before switching back to run north-east to its end at Shardlow in Derbyshire. The route has a total of 75 locks and 230 bridges. Starting from Runcorn, places visited on the route include Northwich, Middlewich, Elworth (Sandbach), Alsager, Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent, Stone, Great Haywood, Little Haywood, Rugeley, Alrewas, Barton-under-Needlewood, Burton Upon Trent, Swarkeston, Aston-on-Trent and finally Shardlow near Long Eaton.
